Metrolink is a light -rail transit system ( with a comparable light rail ) in the U.S. metropolitan region of Greater St. Louis in Missouri and Illinois.

The 74 km -long network connects over 37 stations to Lambert International Airport, Shrewsbury and Scott airbase at Shiloh in Illinois with the city of St. Louis. The week daily ridership is 51,716.

Metrolink is next to Metro bus and Metro Call-A -Ride part of Metro Transit St. Louis and operated by the Bi - State Development Agency. This is a jointly by the states of Illinois and Missouri, the city of St. Louis and St. Louis County in Missouri and St. Clair County and the Monroe County maintained in Illinois organization.

History

In 1990, construction of the first line between North Hanley and 5th & Missouri station in East St. Louis, Illinois were begun. On 31 July 1993, the range of their provision was passed. In 1994, the western extension of North Hanley to Lambert Airport. In the same year the East Riverfront station was inaugurated in East St. Louis. Four years later came up with the station Lambert Airport East added another breakpoint. A majority of the costs were paid from federal funds from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA ).

Metrolink exceeded expectations on the number of users, yet the train grew very slowly. The construction of planned expansions delayed by scarce funds to the FTA. For an ever larger part of the cost of local and regional sources was contributed. Currently, most of the operating costs from funds of the Region is financed.

In 1998 started the construction of the extension to Belleville in St. Clair County in Illinois and could be completed in 2001. This section eight new stations and seven park -and-ride spaces were added.

In May 2003, the distance around the 5.6 km long section of Bellville for Scott airbase at Shiloh was extended. The costs were for the most part by the FIRST ( Fund for Infrastructure, Roads, Schools, and Transit) taken over the State of Illinois. A smaller part was supported by the St. Clair County Transit District.

On 26 August 2006, opened with the track on Brentwood to Shrewsbury a second line. The free park-and -ride space in Brentwood with a capacity of 1000 cars was completed on June 12, 2007.

On 27 October 2008, the still valid name of the lines has been introduced. The line to the airport is signposted the Red Line, which now trains running from Shrewsbury, MO to Fairview Heights, IL trains to the Blue Line and according to the color scheme.
