Hugh de Cressingham

Hugh de Cressingham (* in the 13th century; † September 11, 1297 ) was an English knight in the retinue of King Edward I., and from 1296 to 1297 its treasurer in Scotland.

Edward I had undertaken a campaign to Scotland from March 1296. In April, he was victorious in the Battle of Dunbar on the Scots, whereupon it the Scottish king John Balliol in July, leaving his crown and the Scottish barons did homage to him. The administration of the kingdom remained in the hands of the Scottish nobles, but only to the head of the administration sat Eduard Englishmen. The High Command he transferred John de Warenne as " Guardian of Scotland " and appointed Hugh de Cressingham on August 28, 1296 to the Treasurer before he left Scotland to attend to affairs in France.

He was unpopular with the Scottish population.

In the Battle of Stirling Bridge Hugh was one of the army commander under the command of John de Warenne. Hugh was killed in battle, it is reported that he was still skinned on the battlefield and distributed strips of his skin as a trophy among the Scots. According to the Lanercost Chronicle let himself make a sword- William Wallace from one part of the skin.
