Hugh de Kevelioc, 5th Earl of Chester

Hugh de Kevelioc, 3rd Earl of Chester ( * 1147, † June 30 1181 in Leek (Staffordshire) ) was the son of Ranulph de Gernon, 2nd Earl of Chester and Maud FitzRobert of Gloucester.

It is assumed that he takes its name from his birthplace Kevelioc in Monmouthshire, another hypothesis is that Kevelioc on Cyfeiliog in Merionethshire ( Merionydd ) is decreasing; both located at least in Wales.

Life

When his father's death in 1153 he was underage. He inherited his possession on both sides of the Channel, the Earldom of Chester and the Vice- county Avranches. He participated in the noble revolt of 1173-1174 against Henry II in part, and had great influence that the inhabitants of Brittany joined him. He was taken after the Battle of Alnwick ( 1174 ) caught expropriated and imprisoned, but in 1177 set back in its old state. Later he took part in the campaigns of Henry II in Ireland.
