Hugo Becker

Hugo Becker ( born February 13, 1864 in Strasbourg, † 30 June 1941 in Geiselgasteig ) was a German cellist, cello teacher, and composer.

Becker received Violin, Cello later lessons from his father Jean Becker and was already fifteen years old at the Mannheim court orchestra cellist. He studied with Alfredo Piatti, Jules de Swert and in Dresden with Friedrich Griitzmacher. Since 1884 he was principal cellist in the theater orchestra in Frankfurt am Main and cello teacher at the Hoch Conservatory. In addition, he undertook concert tours, including through the United States, and played in a piano trio with Eugène Ysaye and Busoni, and later with Carl Flesch and Artur Schnabel.

In addition to a suite he composed a cello concerto and works for cello with piano accompaniment. Among his pupils were Enrico Mainardi, Paul Grummer, Beatrice Harrison, Gregor Piatigorsky and Herbert Walenn.
