Hugo Blümner

Hugo Johann Friedrich Daniel Wilhelm Ferdinand Blümner ( born August 9, 1844 in Berlin, † January 1, 1919 in Zurich ) was a German classical scholar and archaeologist Classic.

Life

Hugo Blümner grew up in Breslau, where he attended the Friedrichs Gymnasium. He studied since 1862 in Wroclaw, since 1864, in Berlin, in the summer semester 1865 in Bonn at Otto Jahn. In 1866 he was in Berlin his doctorate under Eduard Gerhard and August Boeckh with a dissertation on Lucian. In 1870, he habilitiere at the University of Breslau for Classics and Archaeology and taught there as a lecturer. In 1875, he was Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Königsberg. 1877 Blümner went to the University of Zurich, where he was in 1919 Professor of Archaeology and Classical Studies until his death. 1888/89 he served as rector.

He devoted himself to the realities of classical antiquity, its technology and terminology of business and the arts among the Greeks and Romans is one of the standard works of ancient art history. As a philologist, he was together with Hermann Hitzig 1896-1910 out a Pausanias issue and wrote text-critical studies of Greek ( Plutarch, Lucian of Samosata ) and Latin ( Petronius, Apuleius ) authors. He also dealt with the metaphor in antiquity and the Bismarck language.

Hugo Blümner was a member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1889 decent.
