The Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts (Hungarian: Magyar Képzőművészeti Egyetem, short MKE) was founded in 1871, is the premier art school in Hungary. Rector of the University is Frigyes king.

History

Until the mid-19th century Hungarian artists learned to Western European art academies. In 1861 the National Society for Hungarian Arts ( Magyar Országos Képzőművészeti Társulat ) was established to promote the development of its own art school. With the support of the Royal Hungarian Academy of Design and was a drawing teacher education (Magyar Királyi Mintarajztanoda És Rajztanárképezde ) - also known as the Royal Hungarian Arts and Crafts School - established on May 6, 1871. The present building of the University dates back to 1877, built according to plans of architect Lajos Rauscher and Adolf Láng.

In the following decades, the university became the center of artists in Hungary; not only for painters and sculptors, but also artisans, stage designer and architect: including Károly Ferenczy, János Vaszary, Viktor Olgyai, Róbert Berény, János Kmetty, Aurél Bernáth, Géza Fónyi, Jenő Barcsay, Gyula Hincz, Károly Koffán and Beni Ferenczy.

Locations and facilities

The Hungarian University of Fine Arts has its headquarters in Budapest Pest with a number of locations and facilities:

  • The main building dating back to 1876 located in the Andrássy út 69-71 and houses among others the Barcsay room, and a library with over 60,000 volumes Academy;
  • 1882 established artists studios Epreskert, the so-called strawberry garden,
  • Feszty the house, as well as
  • The artists' colony Tihany on the northern shore of Lake Balaton.

Within this space offers the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts diverse ( international ) courses at 12 departments ( including: Intermedia and Visual Education ).
