The municipality is located in the west of Iceland Hvalfjarðarsveit in the region Vesturland. On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 641 inhabitants.

The municipality is located between the Hvalfjörður and the Borgarfjorður. It rises to 1,041 meters in Skarðsheiði.

To the west of the township, northeast of Akrafjall, the lake Eiðisvatn lies east of town Melahverfi. From the lake, the river flows into the Laxá Hvalfjörður. Southeast of the mountain Skarðsheiði are the three lakes Eyrarvatn, Glammastaðavatn and Geitabergsvatn. In the extreme east of the township of Lake Hvalvatn lies to the east of the volcano panel Hvalfell and north of Botnssúlur. From this lake the river flows into the Botnsá Hvalfjörður, where it tumbles down the nearly 200 -foot waterfall Glymur. This is the highest waterfall of Iceland.

History

Hvalfjarðarsveit was created on 1 June 2006 by the merger of rural communities Hvalfjarðarströnd ( Hvalfjarðarstrandarhreppur ) Skilmannahreppur, Innri - Akranes ( Innri - Akraneshreppur ) and Leira above Melar ( Leirár -og Melahreppur ). In the election of the new community name is Hvalfjarðarsveit opposite the name proposals Hvalfjarðarbyggð, Heiðarsveit, Heiðarbyggð and Hafnarbyggð prevailed.

Former municipalities

The former rural community Hvalfjarðarströnd counted 147 inhabitants ( 2005). The municipal area was located north of the Hvalfjörður and increases in Skarðsheiði at 1,041 meters. The parish seat was Saurbær.
