Infrastructure

The rail network is not electrified, for the most part and extends to a star shape on the river in the eastern capital Dublin. Most important railway lines are the compounds Dublin - Belfast about Dundalk and Dublin - Cork. In Greater Dublin multiple routes are electrified; they are traversed by the DART suburban railway (Dublin Area Rapid Transit). The track width in Ireland is 1,600 mm.

Rolling stock

Between 2006 and 2009, Iarnród Éireann has replaced all the old intercity sets in the framework of the national infrastructure program Transport 21. For the Cork- Dublin cars were purchased for locomotive-hauled trains, all other routes have since been operated by diesel multiple units of the series 22000. These trains were produced by a consortium of Mitsui, Hyundai Rotem and the Tokyu Car Corporation. More Diesel multiple units of class 22000 were ordered for longer commuter routes in the Dublin area and are to be delivered by 2012.

Transport numbers

2006 promoted Iarnród Éireann claims to 43.1 million, 45.5 million passengers in 2007.
