Ignacy Pieńkowski

Ignacy Pieńkowski ( born July 19, 1877 in Dołubowo, Podlaskie, † September 6, 1948 in Kraków ) was a Polish painter and professor. His brother was the physicist Stefan Pieńkowski.

Life

Pieńkowski was born on the family estate in Dołubowo, his parents were Ludwik and Wiktoria Pieńkowski. From 1892 to 1895 he studied at the School of Painting in Warsaw from Wojciech Gerson. Later he continued his studies at the Art Academy in Krakow under Teodor Axentowicz and Leon Wyczółkowski. In 1898 he moved to Paris, where he attended the Julian School and the Academie Colarossi. He stayed in Munich and Rome and later trips to Germany, Russia and Brazil.

From 1909 to 1913 he taught at the Art Academy in Warsaw. In 1916 he organized an exhibition of Polish art in Moscow. In 1918 he was appointed to the faculty of painting at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts. He was a member of the society of artists " Sztuka " and the Association of Polish Artists ZPAP. In events of " Sztuka " were often Pieńkowskis images shown several solo exhibitions were given to his works, as in 1925 in Curitiba, Brazil.

Work

Pieńkowski painted versatile - portraits, still lifes, landscapes and religious themes. At the beginning of his paintings were dominated by symbolism. Later his work was heavily influenced by the currents of French Post-Impressionism. His students included Tadeusz Kantor, Stanisław Borysowski, Tadeusz Brzozowski, Jan Cybis, Józef Gaczyński and Stefan Maciej Makarewicz. Pictures of Pieńkowski are in the possession of the National Museum in Warsaw and Krakow and the Podlaskie Museum (Polish: " Muzeum Podlaskie " ) in Białystok. The Agricultural Museum (Polish: " Muzeum Rolnictwa " ) is in Ciechanowiec a permanent exhibition on the artist.
