Ä°hsan Ketin

Ihsan Ketin ( born April 10, 1914 in Kayseri, † December 16, 1995 in Istanbul) was a Turkish geologist. He was primarily concerned with the tectonics of Turkey and the distortions that are the cause of earthquakes there.

Ketin studied with a scholarship science with a focus on geology at the Humboldt University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1934 with Hans Cloos at the University of Bonn. In 1938 he became an assistant professor at the University of Istanbul. In 1953 he became Professor of Geology in the Faculty of Mining Science of the Technical University of Istanbul. In 1983 he retired.

As at 28-29. December 1939 the great Erzincan Earthquake in Turkey over 33,000 dead demanded, he turned to the earthquake research and examined the triggering North Anatolian Fault.

In 1988 he received the Gustav- Steinmann Medal. He was an honorary doctorate from the University of Bonn (1988 ), Honorary Member of the Geological Society of America and the Geological Society of London ( 1984). He was also an honorary member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences. In 1981 he received the Hamit - Nafiz - Pamir price of the Geological Society of Turkey and the 1981 Science Award of TUBITAK.
