The municipality has an area of 14.2 km ² and 256 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

The community of Ilha 1989 newly created by splitting off from the community of São Jorge.

In 1999, UNESCO laurel forest of Madeira on the world heritage list. The community of Ilha is to a great extent in this reserve.
