Ilimanaq

Ilimanaq (Danish Claushavn ) is a place in Greenland near the Disco Bay

Ilimanaq ( in Greenlandic place about the expectations ) now has 96 inhabitants. The settlement is 15 km away from Ilulissat to which it belonged administratively long time ( since 1 January 2009 to Qaasuitsup Press Office ). Ilimanaq is one of the oldest Danish settlements in Greenland. It was founded in 1741 by the Danish trade mission. The Danish name was chosen presumably after the Dutch sailors and whalers Klaes Pietersz, who was active in the region 1719-1732. In the late 18th and early 19th century played the place as a base for whaling an important role. 1852 a parish and mission station was established.

After 1880, the settlement lost its importance. The old colonial houses and the church from 1908 are still well preserved. Today Ilimanaq is mainly a starting point for hikes to Qasigiannguit and for boat trips in Kangia ice fjord. A shop provides residents and tourists with the essentials.
