Imeni Karla Libknekhta, Kursk Oblast

Possjolok imeni Karla Libknechta (Russian Посёлок имени Карла Либкнехта translated, Karl- Liebknecht- settlement ) is an urban-type settlement in the Kursk Oblast (Russia) with 7682 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is located about 50 kilometers in a straight line west-southwest of Oblastverwaltungszentrums Kursk on the left bank of the Desna Creek Seim.

The Karl -Liebknecht- settlement is the administrative center of the Rajons Kurtschatowski and is located about 15 km southwest of the county seat Kurchatov and the local nuclear power station Kursk. The settlement is the only town in the eponymous municipality ( gorodskoje posselenije ).

History

Originally called Peny place was first mentioned in 1606. 1868, the railway line was Kursk - Kiev the former private Kursk - Kiev railway ( from 1893 Kiev - Voronezh, 1895 Moscow - Kiev - Voronezh railway) past, which had an economic boom resulted. Even in the 19th century was one of the first and largest sugar factories in the area.

In 1930 received the now grown together with the neighboring village Blochino place the status of an urban-type settlement and the name of the German Communists and co-founder of the Communist Party, Karl Liebknecht ( 1871-1919 ). During World War II the city was occupied by the end of October 1941 until the end of February 1943 by the German Wehrmacht.

In 1977, the settlement was rajon with the entire eastern part of the Lgowski to which they had belonged since 1928, spun rayon in the new Kurtschatowski.

Economy and infrastructure

After the closing of the previously largest companies in the Karl- Liebknecht- settlement, the sugar factory (1997) and a company founded in 1944 Maschinenfabrik, the largest employers are different utilities and construction companies.

Through the town performs the two-track on this section railway line Kiev - Kursk ( Blochino station, kilometer 413), east branches of the goods a connection path for a good 15 km away sugar factory Kollektiwist in Ljubimovka.

The settlement is located on the regional road R199, the Kursk on Kurchatov, Lgow and Rylsk with the Ukrainian border direction Hluchiw links and part of the European route 38.
