International Classification for Standards

The International Classification for Standards (ICS ) is an international classification system that will cover all economic sectors and activities in which technical standards are applied.

It is used by the International Organization for Standardization ( ISO) developed and maintained, and as an ongoing work (Work In Progress ) viewed in the ever done updates. The latest edition of the ICS can from the ISO - free download website. Anyone can submit an application for change or addition of new classifiers for ICS.

ICS serves as a unitary structure for catalogs and databases of technical standards and norms.

National standards such as may additionally be provided for the purpose of mutual comparability with the code names of the ICS system by DIN, ÖNORM or SN. There are possible overlaps with the naming of several code names.

Classification Principles

ICS uses a hierarchical classification, which consists of three full levels, areas, groups and sub- groups are called. All classification levels are characterized by a mapping code and title. The classification code is in the form of Arabic numerals. Generic terms that have no parent classes, get a two-digit number, such as

The notations for groups and sub- groups include the parent notation identifications with. To include for example the subgroup 20 "Lighting, signaling and warning devices " to area 43 and 040, the full identifier is then " 43.040.20 ".

A fourth level of classification is not belonging to the ICS system, but can allow the users to an ICS sub-group to further subdivide. But the addition of a two -digit number is possible behind a hyphen, eg: 35.220.20-10 magnetic tapes

Classification Level 1 contains an area or combination of areas,

  • A sector of the economy or the industry such as agriculture,
  • A technology such as communications engineering
  • An area of activity such as environmental protection, or
  • Can be a science like mathematics or astronomy.

Currently, 40 areas are classified:
