International Hockey Federation

The FIH ( Federation Internationale de Hockey, also: International Hockey Federation, Hockey World Association ) is the world hockey association based in Lausanne. It organizes various hockey competitions such as the Hockey World Championships. President since 29 November 2008, the Spaniards Leandro Negre. History

The FIH was founded on January 7, 1924 in Paris. In 1908 (London) and 1920 ( Antwerp) Hockey discipline was at the Summer Olympics. In the Summer Olympics 1924 hockey was not considered because there was no worldwide association. Therefore, was founded in 1924 on the initiative of Frenchman Paul Léautey the Fédération Internationale de Hockey sur Gazon. The founding members were Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Hungary, Switzerland and Spain. That same year, the FIH was a member of the Olympic movement. 1925 joined Denmark in 1926 was followed by the Netherlands ( Men ), 1927 and 1928, Turkey, Germany, India, Poland and Portugal.

In 1927, the World Association for Women IFWHA was founded (International Federation of Women 's Hockey Associations). The founding members were Australia, Denmark, England, Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, USA and Wales. 1982 merged the two world organizations to FIH.

Since 1928 Amsterdam permanently belongs in the men's hockey program for the Summer Olympic Games since 1980, Moscow also a women's tournament is held. The field hockey World Championship for Men in 1971 and the Field Hockey Women's World Cup for the first time in 1974 World Championships were held in field hockey. 2003 in Leipzig, the first World Championships were held in indoor hockey.

Confederations

The FIH consists of 127 national associations which are in turn a member of five continental federations.

Britain has a special status and occurs only to the Olympic Games, otherwise play the independent members of England, Scotland and Wales. Ireland represents the whole island of Ireland: Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Since 1998, the FIH is awarded annually to the best male and female hockey players in the world. Since 2001 there has also award prizes for players under 23 years.

World Rankings

Since 2003, leads the FIH rankings of the teams. In the score cutting off the last four years at the major international tournaments flows a: Olympic Games, World Championships, Champions Trophy and Challenge and Kontinentalmaisterschaften. In 2008, more tournaments, especially the qualifiers for the Olympic Games and the World Championships, included in the rating. The world ranking is usually the basis for the grouping at the big tournaments and for the occupation of the qualification tournaments.

Major sponsors of the FIH, the auditing company BDO International, the Dutch bank Rabobank, the South Korean conglomerate Samsung Group and the Indian Sahara. Officially, they are called FIH Global hockey partner. These sponsors also occur as title sponsors in international tournaments such as at the BDO Hockey World Cup Men 2006.
