History

InterRail was on 1 March 1972 by several European railway companies of the countries Belgium, Germany, Denmark, East Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Yugoslavia, Luxembourg, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Hungary and the United Kingdom on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the UIC introduced. They wanted to offer young people up to 21 years at low cost as part of the emerging backpacking, meet Europe. Four years later, the age limit from 21 to 23 and in 1979 was raised to 26 years.

In 1985, the InterRail ticket was upgraded with the offer " InterRail Ferry ". Well you could use ferries certain companies at a discount as another means of transport. After the collapse of communism and the fall of the Iron Curtain since 1991 involved other Central and Eastern European countries to InterRail, so that the journey through 28 states was possible.

1994, all participating countries were divided into seven zones:

  • A - Ireland and the United Kingdom
  • B - Finland, Norway and Sweden
  • C - Denmark, Germany, Austria and Switzerland
  • D - Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Croatia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary
  • E - Belgium, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands
  • F - Morocco, Portugal and Spain
  • G - Greece, Italy, Slovenia and Turkey, and the vessel traffic between Italy and Greece (Ancona / Bari - Corfu / Igoumenitsa / Patras )

The ticket was available for either 15 days for a zone or for one month for either two, three or all zones. Four years later, the zone D was divided into two zones:

  • D - Croatia, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary
  • H - Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Macedonia and Romania

After the political separation of Serbia and Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina had joined after 2005 InterRail, the zones D and H saw last as follows:

  • D - Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary
  • H - Bulgaria, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia

In 1998, the InterRail offer was extended to persons over 25 years.

On 1 April 2007, the division was disbanded in zones, since there is only the Global Pass offer and the One Country Pass, which replaced the Euro Domino ticket. This measure was explained by the argument of a low demand. In fact, however, this led to a massive increase in the price of the offer. The countries of Morocco and Russia are no longer involved in the company since the redesign.
