Ioan Vancea

Ioan Vancea also Váncsa ( born May 18, 1820 Vasad, Bihar County, Grand Principality of Transylvania; † July 31, 1892 in Blaj ) was Romanian Greek Catholic Archbishop of Fagaras and Alba Iulia.

Life

Ioan Vancea, noble birth, attended elementary school in his hometown and moved in 1828 to Oradea ( Oradea ). There he attended the convent school (Gymnasium ) of the Premonstratensian. In 1841 he studied at the " Barbareum " in Vienna. In 1845 he returned as a doctor of theology to Oradea, where he was ordained priest on 10 August 1845. On December 7, 1845, he was sent for further studies of ecclesiastical law to Vienna and received it as a further doctorate. Back in Oradea he became deputy on July 1, 1848 notary, professor and secretary of the Bishop Vasile Erdely. 1855 appointed canon, he became director of the diocesan office and diocesan inspector, but remained bishop secretary.

On September 7, 1865, he became the successor to the late Ioan Alexi Bishop of Gherla, Armenopoli, Somes - Ujvár ( German: Neuschloss / Armenian city; Hungarian: Szamosújvár ) selected. Pope Pius IX. confirmed the election on 25 September 1865. On 3 December 1865, he was consecrated in the Cathedral of Oradea Iosif Papp - Szilágyi, Archbishop of Oradea, a bishop. On 28 January 1866 he was installed in his diocese. He built schools with tuition in Romanian language, created to support fund from which scholarships were awarded. He founded a printing press for the creation of teaching materials and church records and established a theological seminary.

On November 21, 1868, he was elected Archbishop of Fagaras and Alba Iulia and confirmed by the Pope on December 21. On April 11, 1869, he was by Alexandru Dobra, bishop of Lugoj, as messenger of the Holy Father Pius IX. installed in the Trinity Cathedral in Blaj as Metropolitan in his archdiocese.

He called for the 20th - 22nd October 1869 a diocesan synod and traveled at the invitation of Pope Pius IX. to Rome and became a councilor and a Council Father of the First Vatican Council. He created more educational institutions, especially in rural areas and equipment for infrastructure improvements in rural areas, due to water supply, sewerage, roads and road construction.

He died on July 31, 1892 and was buried in the crypt of the cathedral.
