Ippolito II d'Este

Ippolito II d' Este (also Hippolytus; * August 25, 1509 in Ferrara, † December 2, 1572 in Rome) was the second son of Duke Alfonso I of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio and Lucrezia Borgia.

At the age of ten he was appointed to succeed his eponymous uncle as Archbishop of Milan. From March 1536 to 1539 he lived at the court of King Francis I of France to the 1539 he was appointed cardinal by sat, in the legitimate hope that Ippolito d' Este, the interests of France and the " French party " to the Holy See consistently would represent. 1564, he was cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Via Lata. With several conclaves Ippolito was also the candidate of the French, but was not elected Pope.

Ippolito II d' Este is the owner of the Villa d' Este in Tivoli.
