Iranian legislative election, 2012

The parliamentary elections in 2012 in Iran was held on 2 March 2012. 48.2 million Iranians were called to vote.

Applicants for the 290 seats of the Iranian Parliament could be between 24 and 30 December 2011 Registration as a candidate. In total, 5,300 candidates had registered, including 390 women. The list of approved candidates for election was announced by the Guardian Council.

Prehistory

According to the allegations of fraud in the Iranian presidential election, expected in 2009 observer a low turnout. The level of voter turnout is considered as an indicator for the acceptance of the Islamic system of government in the population. Results

On Election Day, the opening times of the polling stations, the closing was scheduled for 18:00 local time, were extended by five hours. Furthermore sought from the electoral districts more ballots. Nine women are members of the new parliament, in the last Parliament there were eight female MPs. The opening session of the new Parliament took place on 27 May. Ali Larijani was re-elected to Parliament chief.

Criticism

Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, criticized the Iranian parliamentary elections, " miss all democratic standards " which, simply as "a method for measuring the internal power struggles within the regime. " British Foreign Secretary William Hague described the election as " neither free nor fair. "Even within Iran, the choice was criticized.
