Isocarboxazid is an irreversible non- selective inhibitor of monoamine oxidase (MAO ) inhibitors from the group of hydrazines, which is used as an antidepressant and anxiolytic. In addition, phenelzine, it is one of the few still in use MAOIs hydrazine at all.

Isocarboxazid is applied in the fight against various health disorders, so now also used eg for depression, social phobia or panic disorders and to support the fight against Parkinson 's disease and other dementia- related disorders. Although isocarboxazid is a useful drug, it has numerous side effects.

Isocarboxazid is not the drug of first choice in depression and anxiety disorder, since it interacts with various foods that contain the amino acid tyramine. It inhibits the degradation of this amino acid, which is contained in everyday foods, which can among other things, lead to severe blood pressure crises. Therefore, isocarboxazid and other MAO inhibitors in depression are often regarded as a means of last election.
