István Bilek

István Bilek ( born August 11, 1932 in Budapest, † 20 March 2010) was a Hungarian chess player and chess writer.

István Bilek won in 1962, 1964 and 1970 the Hungarian national championship. In 1958 he was awarded by FIDE the title of International Master in 1962 and a Grand Master.

It repeats after him, that he did not play with the ultimate conclusion and also easily got into time trouble. Still, he could certainly show some success. So he finished 1964 Kecskemét at the zone tournament in a split second place, winning the year 1964/65 the tournament of Reggio Emilia.

With the Hungarian team, he was at the 1966 Chess Olympiad in Havana third parties ( third board ), 1970 in Siegen Second ( third board ) and 1972 in Skopje also Second (2nd board ). In Skopje, he also succeeded in a remarkable victory over Viktor Korchnoi. In total he played from 1958 to 1974 continuously for nine times in Chess Olympiads Hungary, where he won in 1962 and 1972, silver in 1966 and bronze in the individual standings.

Bilek was also active for the father of the successful Polgar sisters. The Hungarian Chess Federation wanted László Polgár be declared to have crazy and instruct his daughters in a home. Bilek prevented.
