István Major

István Major ( born May 20, 1949 in Budapest ) is a retired Hungarian high jumper.

The European Athletics Championships 1969 in Athens, he finished fifth.

In 1971 he won at the Indoor Athletics Championships in Sofia and was fourth at the European Championships in Helsinki

In 1972, he defended his title at the European Indoor Championships in Grenoble and was sixth at the Olympic Games in Munich.

The third title in a row at the European Indoor Championships 1973 in Rotterdam followed in the summer of silver at the Universiade.

In 1974, he won a silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg and was again fourth at the European Championships in Rome, and in 1975 he was eighth at the European Indoor Championships in Katowice and second again at the Universiade. At the Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976, he left in qualifying.

Four times he was Hungarian Champion in the open air (1973, 1976-1978 ) and twice in the Hall (1977, 1978).
