1969 European Athletics Championships

The 9th European Athletics Championships were held until September 21, 1969, at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, near Athens on 16.

In 24 disciplines of men and 14 of women competitions were held. New to the program were the 1500 m and 400 m 4 times the women while joined the 100 -meter distance to the location of the 80 m hurdles.

Participant

More than 900 athletes from 29 countries had reported. The East German team was composed of a total of 62 active, 37 men and 25 women, the total achieved the most gold medals and medals.

Athletes from the Federal Republic of Germany did not start in protest, with the exception of the squadrons at these European Championships. The reason was the case of the refugees from the GDR medium and long- distance runner Jürgen May, who was not allowed to start because it was changed less than three years earlier by the GDR to the Federal Republic. International dressing changes was crucial, even if the German team lead under Max Danz took the view that he had but changed within Germany. The assets of the German team voted and decided against the will of the team lead for a boycott.

World Records

At this event, not less than seven world records were set:

  • Anatoly Bondarchuk from the Soviet Union threw the hammer 74.68 meters wide
  • Frenchwoman Nicole Duclos ran 400 meters in 51.73 s
  • Jaroslava Jehličková from Czechoslovakia ran 1500 meters in a time of 4:10,7 min
  • Both the British and also the French team reached in the 4x400 - meter relay team of women, a time of 3:30,8 min; already in the lead the team from the Federal Republic of Germany had set up with 3:33,9 min a world record, which, however, only one day had stock
  • Nadezhda Tschischowa from the Soviet Union reached the shot put a distance of 20.43 m
