Ivailo Marinov

Ivailo Marinov ( Bulgarian Ивайло Маринов; born July 12, 1960 in Varna, native Ismail Mustafow ) is a former Bulgarian amateur boxer in the light flyweight (Olympic Champion).

Career

Marinov was 1980-1992 at least seven times Bulgarian champions in the light flyweight (-48 kg).

Marinov won at the Olympic Games in Moscow under his birth name Ismail Mustafow after victories over Gerard Hawkins, Ireland (5-0 ), and Ahmed Siad, Algeria (5:0), and a semi-final defeat against Cuban Hipólito Ramos the bronze medal in the light flyweight. Later he was forced by Todor Zhivkov head of state to change its name.

In 1981 he was European champion in Tampere. He suggested, among others, Olympic champion Shamil Sabirov from the Soviet Union (5-0 ) in the final and the representative of the GDR, Dietmar Geilich (5-0 ). In addition, he sat down by the World Cup tournament in Montreal, where he was able to beat his Olympic conqueror Ramos in the semifinals.

His only World Championship title won Marinow at the Munich discharged Amateur World Championships the year 1982. He hit play in the final of the North Koreans Go Yong Hwan (4:1). The following year he was then in his home town of Varna defend the European title and finished the World Cup in Rome a third place. Because of the boycott of the 1984 Olympics by the Eastern bloc countries, however, he could not participate in this Olympic tournament.

At the European Championships 1985 in Budapest, he again reached the final, where they lost against René Breitbarth and had to settle for second place.

In 1988, he succeeded at the Olympic Games in Seoul after beating Mark Epton, UK (5-0 ), Henry Martinez, El Salvador (5-0 ), Alexandr Makhmutov, Soviet Union (5-0 ), and Leopoldo Serantes, Philippines (5:0), the finals. With another victory against the American Michael Carbajal (5:0) to Marinow secured the gold medal

In 1989, Marinov et al won in Athens with a win against Jan Quast his third European Championship and participated in the World Championships in Moscow, where he was eliminated, however, surprisingly even in the first round of the tournament. His last major success was his fourth European title in 1991 in Gothenburg. In the course of this tournament he suggested, inter alia, Rafael Lozano, Spain ( 35:5 ).

The Bulgarian Association of Journalists chose Marinow the outstanding Bulgarian boxer of the 20th century.
