Ivan Abadjiev

Ivan Nikolov Abadschiew ( Bulgarian Иван Николов Абаджиев, English transcription Ivan Nikolov Abadzhiev, . Born February 12, 1932 in Novi Pazar ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter and coach.

Career

Career as a weightlifter

Ivan Abadschiew began at age 21 in 1953 with the weight lifting. He progressed rapidly and reached already at the World Championships in Munich in 1955 a very good result in the lightweight (then to 67.5 kg of body weight). At the World Championships in 1957 in Tehran, he was vice champion at lightweight. This was his greatest international success as an active weightlifter. After the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 he finished his weightlifting career.

Career as a coach

After the end of his active career Ivan Abadschiew began training as a coach. He was from 1968 to 1989 and from 1997 to 2000 head coach of the Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation. As such, he has been extremely successful and led the Bulgarian weightlifters within a few years at the top.

Training Philosophy

Abadschiew represents an extreme position regarding the training of his athletes. He is of the opinion that the assistance exercises, such as any kind of trains or modifications of the competition disciplines, no use for the development of athletes bring. Therefore Abadschiew limited training on the two competition disciplines tearing and jerk and the squat front for strength building.

Doping problem

In the time that it was responsible Abadschiew, several weightlifters were disqualified for doping; including Valentin Hristov and Blagoj Blagoev, disqualified as Olympic champion and silver medalist in 1976 in Montreal, as well as Mitko Grablew and Angel Gentschew disqualified as Olympic gold medalist in Seoul in 1988.

Even in the aftermath Bulgarian Olympic, world and European champion of doping were repeatedly transferred ( Sewdalin Mintschew, Sewdalin Marinov, Ivan Ivanov, Isabella Dragnewa, Milena Trendafilowa ) or were detected them other types of fraud such as the delivery of foreign urine in doping controls ( Slatan Wanew Georgi Markov, Galabin Bojewski ), the multiple world champion and Olympic champion Bojewski was even debunked twice as doping offenders and locked for eight years. For this reason, the success Abadschiews are to be considered differentiated as a coach.
