IWBF Champions Cup

The IWBF Champions Cup is an international competition for wheelchair basketball club teams, from the European section of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation ( IWBF Europe) is organized. Most successful teams are the BS Verkerk and RSV Lahn -Dill with five titles.

History

The competition was established in 1976 for the first time held regularly. This is the oldest club competition in the sport in Europe. It was launched in the previous year by Hans Tukker, the coach of Dutch club SC Antelope, and was initially under the name WEWBT (Western European Wheelchair Basketball Tournament). Together with Willi Brinkmann from BSG Duisburg -Buchholz made ​​Tukker the organizing committee of the competition.

By 1982 the competition was organized into two divisions. Then the committee, instead, a division as well as preliminary and a final round decided to launch. And the number of teams has reduced. In May 1983 recognized the ISMGF (International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation ) the WEWBT as the official European Championship for club teams. In the same year, the competition was renamed in EuroCup 1988 finally in Champions Cup.

Until the turn of the century Dutch clubs dominated the Cup. So alone won the BC Verkerk five times between 1991 and 1996, setting a record that could be obtained only in 2012 by the RSV Lahn Dill. A total of 16 victories were won by Dutch clubs, followed by France ( 6) and Germany (5).
