Jacksboro is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Jack County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is centrally located in Orange County on U.S. Highway 281 in North Texas, is about 80 km from Oklahoma and has a total area of 17.6 km ², of which 2.5 km ² water surface.

History

The first settlers arrived around 1855 and settled along the banks of Lost Creek. Was named the place in honor of William H. Jack and his brother Patrick, both veterans of the Texas Revolution. 1858 was the first stagecoach of the Butterfield Overland Mail here.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 4,533 people in 1,382 households and 954 families. The population density was 300.7 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 81.95 % White, 10.46 % African American, 0.57 % Native American, 0.31 % Asian, 0.02 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 5.56 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.13% were of mixed descent, and 10.74 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,382 households, 33.7 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.7 % were married couples living together. 11.7% were single mothers and 30.9% were non-families. 28.4 % of all households were single-person households, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size amounted to 3.06.

21.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 13.0% from 18 to 24, 33.1% 25-44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.3 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 139.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over 156.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 30,833, and the median income for a family $ 36,759. Males had a median income of $ 26,716 versus $ 20,592 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,595. 15.0 % of the population and 12.2% of families are below the poverty line. Of which 16.0 % have children under the age of 18 and 14.4 % of those 65 or older.
