Jacob von Sandrart

Jacob of Sandrart ( born May 31, 1630 Frankfurt am Main, † August 15, 1708 in Nuremberg, Germany) was an engraver, art dealer and publisher in Nuremberg.

Life

At the age of 10 he received his training from his uncle Joachim von Sandrart, who was at that time in Amsterdam. He then went for four years to Gdansk, from 1644, he made a one and a half year journey through Thorn, Breslau and Vienna to Regensburg. Since June 10, 1654, he was with Regina Christina Eimmart from Regensburg, daughter of the famous engraver and mathematician Georg Christoph Eimmart Elder, married. From 1656 he lived permanently in Nuremberg. In 1662 he founded the painters Academy, whose first director was appointed and which still exists as the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg.

Sandrart was a prolific artist. In total, over 400 engravings by him are known. In addition to his activities for Nuremberg publishers ( Endter, Felsecker ) he also published illustrated works published by the author. He was primarily known as a portraitist of his contemporaries. A large part of his engravings shows more or less prominent contemporaries from Nuremberg. Sandrart was at its time the most expensive engraver in the city, he was very popular due to its realistic representation. Many of these prints were created in collaboration with Sigmund von Birken, who wrote verses to the portraits. With birch he was good friends, and he gave him also awarded contracts for editing artistic illustrated works. The Teutsche Academie of the noble building, image and painting arts of his uncle Joachim was conceived by him jointly with birches.

Even Jacobs children Susanna Maria and Johann Jacob became known as an engraver.
