Jacopo Bellini

Jacopo Bellini, Giacomo Bellini ( * around 1400 probably in Venice, † 1470 /71, Venice) was an Italian painter of the Venetian school.

Life

Jacopo Bellini was the son of a pewterer. Where and with whom he began to study is unknown, but he was active during a stay in Florence, from 1422-1425, around 1423, as a pupil and assistant in the studio of Gentile da Fabriano. It must be a case have shown to be very efficient, since it was the envy of local artists. This incited probably some young people to at, on June 11, 1423 to raid the workshop of the Gentile and throwing stones. To protect these and the works of art, she defended Jacopo Bellini, injuring obviously one or more of the attackers. For this he had to serve a long prison sentence and then leave Florence. It is believed that he accompanied in 1426 Gentile to Rome. How long he remained there is not known. In subsequent years, but he held himself well, primarily in and around Venice on.

1429 his first son was born, whom he named in admiration of his master Gentile. To 1430/31, his son Giovanni was born, both of which were among the greatest painters of Venice.

Style

Jacopo Bellini can be regarded as the painter who brought the spirit and traditions of the Renaissance in Venice. While his contemporaries as Giambono, Jacobello del Fiore and Antonio Vivarini still adhered to the style of Byzantine icons and this only enriched with a touch of gothic elegance, Jacopo was impressed from the outset by the Florentines. In addition to his master Gentile da Fabriano he also admired Andrea del Castagno, the sculptor Donatello, Paolo Uccello and perhaps most notably Fra Filippo Lippi. He enjoyed a good reputation very quickly, which made his name known to all the major princely courts in Italy. He revolutionized painting in Venice and prepared the way for his talented sons, but also artists such as Giorgione and Titian.

Of even greater art historical importance as his paintings are the surviving drawings. As one of the first artist ever, he created sketches for all sorts of topics. In addition to antiques studies, he left behind a large number of figures, nude and garment studies. He drew both mythological as well as religious and secular scenes. Many other drawings show animals. The majority of these drawings is housed in two sketchbooks, which today are located in London and the Louvre in Paris in the possession of the British Museum.
