Jakob Aljaž

Jakob Aljaž ( born July 6, 1845 in Zavrh pod Šmarno Goro (municipality Medvode ) north of Laibach, Carniola, Empire of Austria; † May 4, 1927 in Dovje in Jesenice, Yugoslavia, now Slovenia) was a Roman Catholic priest and composer.

Aljaž played an important role in the development of Slovenian mountaineering. As a priest in Dovje ( Lengenfeld ) to Wurzener Save in the north of the former Austrian crown land of Carniola and as a mountaineer he bought for five guilders reason on the Kredaricaplateau and the top of Triglav to build on modest climber points: 1895 Aljaž bivouac ( Aljažev stumbled ) at the summit of Triglav, 1896 Staničev - box just below the summit of Triglav (actually a cave in the rock ) and the Kredarica hut ( Triglavski dom na Kredarici ), today one of the most frequented Alpine huts in Slovenia. In 1896 created Aljaž house in the Vrata valley with the chapel and at the Kredarica Hut begin secured climbing routes between small and large as well as the Triglav Tominškov path of Vrat to Kredarica.

Aljaž was explorer and discoverer of some alpine plants.

He has 1871, the Christmas carol "Silent Night, Holy Night " translated under the title " Sveta noč " into Slovene. He has also set to music poems by Simon Gregorčič.

His most famous songs are " Oj Triglav moj dom (O Triglav, my home ) ", composed in 1896, reprinted in his 1900 published work " Slovenski pesmarici II ( Slovenian Songbook II) ". ( The text is from 1894, written by the priest Matija Zemljič from Gornja Radgona ( Oberradkersburg ) on the Mur River in the former Lower Styria. ) Also 1900 ( Maribor ) was in the magazine " Lipica " in Maribor published a theological manuscript, was involved in the Aljaž.

Banka Slovenije issued coins in his memory to five, 500 and 5000 Tolar.
