James De Mille

James De Mille (born 23 August 1833 in Saint John, New Brunswick; † January 28, 1880 in Halifax, Nova Scotia ) was a Canadian professor of classical literature and writers.

Life

James De Mille taught classical literature at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, and at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His works include historical romances, satires and adventure novels for young people.

His best-known work today is A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder (1888 posthumously ). This is an anti- utopia that is enclosed in a travel and adventure story of a sailor at the South Pole. The manuscript is sometimes seen as dependent on the literature Henry Rider Haggard 's and Jules Verne; However, the latter authors have published their fantastic trip reports until after 1880, the date of death De Milles. In this respect, De Mille stands on its own as the author of this popular in the late 19th century genre of literature.
