Jan Stanisławski (painter)

January Stanisławski (* June 24, 1860 in Olschana, Russian Empire; † January 6, 1907 in Kiev ) was a Polish painter.

Stanisławski was the main representative of the newer Polish landscape painting. He created small, atmospheric paintings with lively color and light effects. Stanisławski was heavily influenced by Claude Monet.

He studied mathematics at the University of Warsaw and in Saint Petersburg and studied painting under Wojciech Gerson in Warsaw, Krakow and later in Paris. In Krakow, he became in 1887 the chair of landscape painting at the art academy.

He usually created small-scale, freely painted landscape images. Stanisławski was friends with the artists of the Krakow Bohème, and fought with supporters of traditional painting. He met with his friends in the local " Jama Michalika " ( German: Michaliks cave ), the seat of the cabaret " Zielony Balonik " ( German: Green Balloon ).

His students, he led out into the open, away from the musty, dark studio. He is regarded as the founder of the Cracow School of landscape painting.
