Jane Pierce

Jane Means Appleton Pierce ( born March 12, 1806 Hampton, New Hampshire; † December 2, 1863 in Andover, Massachusetts) was the wife of the 14th U.S. president Franklin Pierce and the First Lady of the United States from 1853 to 1857.

Her father was Jesse Appleton. When he died, she moved with her mother to Amherst, New Hampshire. There, Jane Appleton met the young lawyer Franklin Pierce. Only many years later married the two. At the time of the wedding, the bride was 28 years old.

On December 2, 1863, she died of tuberculosis in Andover. It is located on the side of her husband, buried in the Old North Cemetery in Concord.
