Jânio Quadros

Jânio da Silva Quadros ( born January 25, 1917 in Campo Grande, MS, † February 16, 1992 in São Paulo, SP) was a Brazilian politician and in 1961 president of his country.

He joined in 1960 as governor of the state of São Paulo to the presidential election on. His election victory against politicians of the old guard, especially with the promise of further democratization and the fight against corruption, caused a stir well. He had won the election primarily as an anti- politician; his open friendship and support for Fidel Castro called on the United States on the plan.

He took over the presidency in 1961 by Juscelino Kubitschek. Quadros tried using radical means to rehabilitate the state budget, went with it, but especially with his eccentric style, unpopular. After only seven months in office, he announced his resignation, in the hope that the masses would go for it on the road. The masses did not do so, and his successor was constitutionally the social reformist former Vice President João Goulart.

From 1 January 1986 to 31 December 1988, he held for the third time the office of mayor of São Paulo.
