Japan Rail Pass

The Japan Rail Pass (Japaneseジャパン レール パスjapan RERU pasu ) is a rail pass, which is sold by the Japan Railway Group and can be used for most transport in the JR Group. The rail pass is designed to promote travel and tourism in Japan.

Rail Pass

The Rail Pass is available in two versions, one for each of the classes of cars: default class (普通 车Futsu -sha) and First Class or Green Car (グリーン 車Gurin -sha). Also, the passport is limited in time. There are passes for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days available. The following table summarizes prices (in yen) and periods for each pass together. The voucher ( Exchange Order, see below) is bought and paid for converted according to current exchange rates in local currency in your home country.

The Rail Pass is sold by the JR Group, but it has to be bought a voucher from a travel agent outside of Japan. The voucher is also sold by the Japanese airlines Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways. He can not be purchased inside Japan. The coupon itself may not be used for traveling and must be exchanged for one of those follow JR stations on a JR ticket counter (みどりの窓口midori no madoguchi ):

The pass is valid for the use of transport, the Japan Railways Group (JR) in the entire country in the excellent car class on the following lines:

Train

  • Shinkansen, except Nozomi and Mizuho
  • Inter-regional express trains ( Limited Express) (特急Tokkyu )
  • Express trains ( Express) (急 行kyuko )
  • Fast trains (Rapid (快速kaisoku ) and Special Rapid (新 快速shin- kaisoku ) )
  • Regional trains (Local ) (普通Futsu )

Conditions for the exchange

The Rail Pass was introduced for tourism and is therefore bound to some conditions.

Eligibility requirements

The user must meet one of the following two conditions:

  • A tourist with a " Temporary Visitor " sticker (Temporary Visitor ) in the passport. This passport must be shown on the exchange of the voucher, a photocopy is not allowed. ( Does not apply to people with a working holiday visa! )
  • A Japanese citizen living abroad, and there permanently resides, or
  • Is married to a Japanese person without nationality who lives in a country other than Japan.

Redeem the voucher

The voucher must be redeemed within three months of the issue against the Japan Rail Pass. Here, the date must be specified from the Japan Rail Pass is valid. This date must be within a period of one month after the exchange of the voucher.
