Jean-Baptiste de La Curne de Sainte-Palaye

Jean -Baptiste de La Curne de Sainte- Palaye ( born June 6 1697 in Auxerre, † March 1, 1781 ) was a French historian, philologist and antiquary, who was in 1758 a member of the Académie française.

Life

La Curne, a favorite of the Queen and the nobility, worked as a historian and philologist, and in 1724 a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres already. On May 22, 1758, he was elected as the successor of Louis de Boissy member of the Académie française, and took there the sixth chair ( fauteuil 6).

His major publications include Mémoires sur l' ancienne chevalerie (1753 ), Dictionnaire des antiquités françaises and his most famous work Glossaire de l' ancienne langue française.

La Curnes work are among the sources of melodrama The dog of the Aubry René Charles Guilbert de Pixérécourt.
