Jean Ping

Jean Ping ( * November 24, 1942 in Omboué ) is a Gabonese politician, diplomat and President of the 59th session of the UN General Assembly.

Life

Jean Ping is the son of a Gabunerin and an immigrant from France Chinese trader. His career at the United Nations began in 1972 as a civilian observer in the area for External relations and cooperation with UNESCO. From 1978 to 1984 he was permanent representative of his country at UNESCO.

Because of its diplomatic and political experience, he was in 1984 director of the President of Gabon, and retained this position until 1990. In that year he was appointed Minister of Information, where he was responsible among other things for postal services, telecommunications and tourism. Furthermore, he was still working as a government spokesman in also. From then on, he held several ministerial posts, including for mining, energy and water, and was Deputy Minister of Finance, Economy, Budget and Privatization. He was then Minister for Planning, Environment and Tourism, a post he ( Ministre d'Etat ) and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Francophonie held until 1999 and his appointment as Minister of State.

Ping repeatedly led his country's delegation at the UN General Assembly to, as with many other international conferences, such as UNESCO, the World Bank and the African Union.

Jean Ping was chairman of the African Union Commission. The Heads of State of the Union had elected him at a summit in Addis Ababa on 1 February 2008 in this office. He is the successor of the first AU Commission President Alpha Oumar Konaré. In this role, he also tried unsuccessfully on December 17, 2010 in the government crisis in the Ivory Coast to mediate 2010/2011. On October 15, 2012 from South Africa Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was his successor.

Jean Ping has been awarded several national and international honors. Ping has a PhD in Economics ( University of Paris I), and received honorary doctorates from the Institute of Diplomacy of China and the Institute of African Studies of the Russian Wissenschaftskadaemie in Moscow. Jean Ping is the author of several publications.

Jean Ping is married and has several children.
