Julian Hunte

Julian Robert Hunte KCMG, OBE ( born March 14, 1940 in Castries ) is a diplomat and politician of the Caribbean nation of St. Lucia. He was of 16 September 2003 to 14 September 2004, President of the 58th UN General Assembly.

In addition, he was from April 2001 to October 2004 Foreign Minister of St. Lucia.

Since March 2006 he has been Chairman of the Alliance of Small Island States ( AOSIS ).

Life

Hunte has studied business administration and accounting, as a student, he played in the National Cricket Team of his country; after his playing career, he stayed true to the sport as an official. His political career began in 1967 as Hunte city council and union leaders. Later his way across the mayoralty of the capital Castries and other agencies led him to appeal to the Cabinet in 2001. Besides he was chairman of the trade union federation and led from 1984 to 2004, the Labour Party of St. Lucia. Between 1998 and 2001 represented Hunte his country as Ambassador to the United Nations. He was elected President of the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2003.

Hunte is married and has four children.

Honors

Hunte was admitted to the Order of the British Empire with the rank ( OBE) in 1979. Immediately after the end of the term of office as President of the UN General Assembly was Hunte in 2004, although he was a Roman Catholic, a proponent of the right to abortion ( and still is ), appointed by Pope John Paul II to the Grand Cross Knight of the Order of Pius.
