Jeffrey Sterling, Baron Sterling of Plaistow

Jeffrey Maurice Sterling, Baron Sterling of Plaistow, of Pall Mall in the City of Westminster GCVO CBE (* December 27, 1934 ) is a British business leaders, entrepreneurs and politicians of the Conservative Party, which is a life peer member of the House of Lords since 1991.

Life

Managers, entrepreneurs and voluntary work

After schooling Sterling was 1955-1957 first employee stockbroker Paul Schweder & Co as well as following up in 1962 by G Eberstadt & Co before it was 1962-1964 financial director of the General Guarantee Corp. After he was director of Gula Investments Ltd from 1964 and 1969 Executive, 1969, he was CEO of the company he founded Sterling Guarantee Trust plc, which merged in 1985 with the P & O.

During this time he also began his commitment to the World ORT, a Jewish non-governmental organization for the promotion of education, training, and is a member of the executive since 1966. After he was 1969-1973 chairman of the organizing committee, it is since 1974 President of Technical Services, and since 1978 Vice-President of World ORT in the UK.

In 1977 he was one of the founders of Mobility, an organization to promote the mobility of people with disabilities, and has been Chairman of the Executive Committee. After he was 1977-1994 Vice - Chairman, since 1994 he is Chairman of Mobility. For his services he was in 1977 Commander of the Order of the British Empire. At the same time he became involved in organizations for the promotion of art and culture and was among other things, 1975-1983 Chairman of the Young Vic Theatre Co and from 1983 to 1999 chairman of the board of the Royal Ballet School and at the same time from 1986 to 1999 member of the board of the Royal Ballet.

House of Lords member

By Letters Patent of 17 January 1991 sterling was raised as a life peer with the title Baron Sterling, of Pall Mall in the City of Westminster into the nobility. Shortly afterwards, was his introduction ( Introduction) as a member of the House of Lords.

In the following years he was 1992-1994 President of the Executive Committee of the ship owners association and 2000-2003 Chairman of P & O Cruises. He was honored with the Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order in 2002. Since 2005, Lord Sterling, the 1991 Honorary Captain of the Royal Naval Reserve and Elder Brother of Trinity House, a Trustee of the National Maritime Museum.

Honors and Awards

Lord Sterling, the 1995 Honorary Doctor of Business Administration from Nottingham Trent University, and in 1996 an honorary Doctor of Civil Law from the University of Durham, is Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors ( 1993) and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects ( 1997).

In addition, he was awarded in 1998 Knight of the Order of Saint John, 2002 Grand Officer of the Order de Mayo in Argentina and in 2004 with the Federal Cross of Merit 1st class.
