Jenkins' whipray

The stingrays Himantura draco is a ray species from the family of stingrays ( Dasyatidae ); English wears the type of the trivial name "Dragon stingray ", literally translated as dragon stingray.

Biology

This skate can reach a diameter of up to 130 cm. He lives in subtropical marine biotopes up to depths of around 30 meters. Its habitats are located in the western Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Durban.

The animals have striking hard and curved hook-shaped spines on the midline of their body brown on top and small dark brown spots on the rear edge of the body. The muzzle is square. The tail is slender and slightly longer than the body, wearing no fins, but a sting.

The ovoviviparous species is able to double its population within 4.5 to 14 years old, what a low resistance to population changes, for example by fishing means.

The species has no commercial significance.
