Jérémie

Jérémie (Creole: Jeremi ) is a district and the chief town of the department of Grand Anse in the southwest of Haiti.

Jérémie is located on the edge of the land in the extreme southwest of Haiti and is one of the Haitian cities on the Gulf of Gonâve. In Census 2003, approximately 31,000 residents were determined. The Grande -Anse, one of Haiti's most important rivers, empties in the Gulf of Gonâve Jérémie into the Caribbean Sea.

Jérémie was repeatedly place of historical events; 27 people were killed in the so-called Jérémie Vespers in late summer and autumn of 1964 massacres of the Haitian army and the Tonton Macoutes killed after 13 members of the Jeune Haiti had the beginning of August trying to overthrow in 1964 the regime of the dictator François Duvalier ( " Papa Doc ").

In Jérémie a number of renowned artists and historians were born, including Etzer Vilaire and Emile Roumer.

Jérémie is since 1972 the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jérémie.
