History

Roman Empire and nachimperiale time

Today Jesolo was founded under the name Equilium at the time of the Roman Empire as a vicus (village) on an island near the mouth of the Piave. She was on the long waterway from Ravenna one of the many stages within the lagoon where the merchant ships halted, especially in winter, to protect themselves from the strong winds ( bora ) and the sea storms. After the fall of the Roman Empire the city was formed along with other cities in the Upper Adriatic their own kingdom with Jesolo and Civitas Nova ( Eraclea) as its capital. First Ruler was the Doge Paolo Lucio Anafesto. In the following centuries Jesolo experienced a first heyday, which was due to the trade, river transport and salt mining in particular.

Equilium (today Jesolo) had to contend with numerous floods of the Piave. The Piave changed - like all the other northern Italian rivers at that time - often its orbit, which had a dramatic impact on the residents of the city. In the following years the Port has become increasingly difficult due to sediment deposits of the Piave and the land ever more accessible. Thus the Hungarians were more often in Equilium. Despite all the commercial ran for several centuries further good. Gradually, however, lost Jesolo important again, because part of the population migrated to Venice.

New center

Since the 15th century, developed at the junction, which formed the river and the canal, a new town center. The name of the family Zucharin, who were entrusted with the care of the traffic channel, became the new city name: Cavazucharina, " the channel Zucharins ".

In the 17th century, was moved in the course of Venetian River diversions and the Piave in a new bed. It flows since no longer Jesolo, but eastward and flows Cortellazzo in the Adriatic Sea, while on the old river bed which is also today still called Piave Vecchia (Old Piave), which flows into the Adriatic Sea Sile. The two rivers since then joins a channel.
