Jesper Tørring

Jesper Tørring ( born September 27, 1947 in Randers ) is a former Danish athlete. At a height of 1.86 m his competition weight was 72 kg.

Jesper Tørring 1974 European champion in the high jump. He is the only Dane to win a title in a jump competition in international championships.

Career

The European Athletics Championships 1969 in Athens Jesper Tørring finished with 7.41 meters twelfth place in the long jump. 1971 in Helsinki, he retired the 110-meter hurdles in 14.7 seconds from the lead. In the long jump ranged 7.52 also not to qualify for the finals. In Munich at the Olympic Games in 1972, he retired in the hurdles already in advance of his time was stopped with 14.50 seconds. In the long jump he remained in qualifying without a valid attempt.

After he was back in 1972 first became Danish champion in the high jump, he joined in the following years internationally, especially in this discipline in appearance. In the Indoor Athletics Championships in Gothenburg in 1974, he finished with 2.17 meters in fourth place behind the antretenden for the Soviet Union Lithuania Kestutis sapka, the Hungarian István Major and Vladimír Maly from Czechoslovakia.

Outdoors at the European Championships 1974 in Rome Maly dropped out in third, fourth Major and Jacek Wszola in fifth with 2.19 meters. Tørring and sapka contrast, both jumped 2.21 meters and 2.23 meters in the first attempt and both mastered 2.25 meters at the second attempt. Thus, both were higher jumped on the flop as Dick Fosbury at his Olympic victory in 1968. Having both Tørring and sapka failed to 2.27 meters, won Tørring gold, undermined ever since sapka a failed attempt at 2.17 meters and 2.19 meters had.

At the Olympic Games in 1976 Tørring was eighth with 2.18 meters. Then he could reach international front places more.

Jesper Tørring was Danish champion in the hurdles in the years 1971 and 1973-1977, in the long jump during the years 1969-1977 and 1972-1973 and 1975-1980 in the high jump. Overall, he won 33 Danish championship with Hall titles.
