He learned the game of golf with his father, Mike, the Head Pro of the Uniontown Country Club near Pittsburgh. After attending the University of Arizona, the talented basketball player decided in 1992 to pursue a career of professional golfer.

Between 1998 and 2003, Furyk won at least one tournament every year on the PGA TOUR, including his first major - the U.S. Open in 2003 - and ventured into the top 10 World Golf Rankings. In the 2004 season he could only play 14 events, because he had to miss three months due to a wrist surgery became necessary. In the years 2005 and 2006, Furyk could catch up for lost time, and strengthen its ranking with more victories and a second place finish at the 2006 U.S. Open. The Open Championship Furyk finished fourth, and after his victory at the Canadian Open in September 2006, he reached the second place in the World Golf Rankings. Since then he has constantly to be found in the top 20 in the world rankings.

The end of September 2010, he won the final tournament of the PGA TOUR, Tour Championship. 1.35 million dollars he received - the highest prize money in golf for a tournament victory. He also won the overall title of the series, called the FedEx Cup. 10 million U.S. dollars Furyk will receive this addition of the so-called bonus pool.

On the PGA TOUR Jim Furyk is one of the most successful players ever. A total of 47.6 million U.S. dollars ( as at 28 September 2010) he won in his career. Only Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson earned so far more prize money. Furyk is one of only six players in the history of the U.S. PGA Tour, which played a 59'er Round (BMW Championship 2013 in Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois). His caddy is Mike " Fluff " Cowen, who previously Tiger Woods accompanied by his spectacular rise to number 1.

The game

Jim Furyk is a "Short Hitter " in the PGA pros field - in the ranking of "Driving Distance" leads him the PGA for the year 2012 only ranked 171 ( out of 191 ) with an average of 280 yards. However, its strength is the iron play: In shock from the fairway Furyk reached in the same year an average closer to the flag of 32 feet and 10 inches, which corresponded to Rank 3. Even more impressive was his play in the sand: Here he achieved an average closer to the flag of 6 feet and 11 inches - the best value in the field.

Very unusual is the swing motion of Jim Furyk: He leads the club in the recovery exceptionally steeply above the head, the clubhead and not - as usually taught - remains on a plane of a circular path, and then propose on a much flatter line. The clubhead, therefore, describes a very conspicuous " loop " in the air, he still works with a very intensive use of the lower body. Overall, Jim Furyk 's swing therefore appears very uneasy and complicated, but it works exceptionally reliable.
