Jim Hogg

James Stephen "Jim" Hogg (* March 24, 1851 in Rusk, Texas, † March 3, 1906 in Houston, Texas) was a Texas lawyer and 21st Governor of Texas.

Life

Hogg was born on March 24, 1851 as the son of Joseph Lewis Hogg and Lucanda McMath in Cherokee County. His father, who served as a major general in the Confederate Army, died in 1862 and his mother in 1863, after which he continued the plantation of the family with his siblings. 1866 Hogg went to Tuscaloosa (Alabama ) to study there. In 1873 he married Sally Stinson, who died in 1895. They had a daughter named Ima.

From 1887 to 1891 Hogg exercised the office of the Attorney General of Texas. In 1890 he was elected as a Democrat to the Governor of Texas and reigned from 1891 to 1895. He devoted a part of his political work of combating nepotism and corruption. Hogg died on March 3, 1906 in Houston and was buried at the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. The Jim Hogg County was named after him.
