João Crisóstomo de Abreu e Sousa

João Crisóstomo de Abreu e Sousa ( born January 27, 1811 in Lisbon, † January 7, 1895 ) was from 1890 to 1892 Prime Minister of Portugal.

The reign of João Crisóstomo de Abreu e Sousa fell into a severe crisis of the Portuguese monarchy. His predecessor António de Serpa Pimentel had to resign to conflicting colonial claims in southern Africa due to disputes with the United Kingdom. King Charles I appointed then João Crisóstomo de Abreu e Sousa, who was Member of Parliament since 1861 and from 1864 to 1865 Minister of Public Works in the government of the Duke of Loulé, to head a bipartisan government. In the time of his reign was a republican uprising in Porto and the state bankruptcy of 1891.
