Joaquim Arcoverde de Albuquerque Cavalcanti

Joaquim Arcoverde Cardinal de Albuquerque Cavalcanti ( born January 17, 1850 in Cimbres, Brazil, † April 18, 1930 in Rio de Janeiro) was Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. He was the first cardinal Brazil and Latin America.

Life

Joaquim de Albuquerque Cavalcanti Arcoverde studied in Rome and Paris Natural Sciences, Catholic theology and philosophy. He received his doctorate in both philosophy and in Catholic theology and received on 4 April 1874, the sacrament of Holy Orders. After further studies in Paris, he directed from 1876 to 1878 the seminary of Olinda. He then spent several years community pastors and teachers.

In 1888 he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Bahia São Salvador, but refused to do so, so that the appointment was withdrawn. 1890 he was appointed by Pope Leo XIII. Bishop of Goiás. He received his episcopal consecration on 26 October 1890, the then Cardinal Secretary of State, Cardinal Rampolla Mariano del Tindaro; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia, Antônio de Macedo Costa, and the Camerlengo and Cardinal, Cardinal Domenico Ferrata. In 1892, he was titular bishop of Argos and Coadjutor Bishop of São Paulo. On August 19, 1894, he was followed by the late Lino Deodato Rodrigues de Carvalho by a bishop of the Diocese of São Paulo. In 1897 he received the appointment as Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro.

Pope Pius X took Joaquim Arcoverde Cavalcanti de Albuquerque on December 11, 1905 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Bonifacio ed Alessio in the College of Cardinals to. He was thus the first Cardinal Brazil and Latin America. Due to health problems he was from 1921 to more and more da Silveira Cintra depends on the support of his Coadjutor Sebastião Leme, who should be his successor after his death.

He died on April 18, 1930 in Rio de Janeiro and was buried in the local Metropolitan Basilica.
