Domenico Ferrata

Cardinal Domenico Ferrata ( born March 4, 1847 in Capranica, Viterbo Province, Italy Papal States today, † October 10, 1914 in Rome, Italy ) was a Vatican diplomat and later became a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Domenico Ferrata was born on March 4, 1847 in Capranica. On September 18, 1869 Ferrata received the sacrament of Holy Orders. In 1876 he was appointed professor of canon law in Rome. In 1879 he was auditor of the Apostolic Nunciature in Paris.

In April 1885 Ferrata was appointed Titular Archbishop of Thessalonica and Apostolic Nuncio in Belgium. He received his episcopal consecration on 19 April 1885, the then Cardinal Secretary of State, Cardinal Lodovico Jacobini. In 1891 he was nuncio in France.

At the age of 49 years he was on June 22, 1896 by Pope Leo XIII. taken as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Prisca in the College of Cardinals.

In the following years Ferrata served as Cardinal Prefect in various congregations of the Roman Curia as Prefect of the Congregation of Rites as 1900-1902 and 1908 -1914 as prefect of the newly-established by Pius X. Sacred Congregation for the Discipline of the Sacraments. On January 2, 1914 the Pope appointed him secretary of the Holy Office.

A month before his death, appointed by Pope Benedict XV. on September 4, 1914 Cardinal Secretary of State.
