Joaquim Barbosa

Joaquim Benedito Barbosa Gomes ( born October 7, 1954 in Paracatu, Minas Gerais State, Brazil ) is a Brazilian lawyer and African judges. Appointed in 2013, he is the first Afro-Brazilian president of the Supreme Court of Brazil ( Supremo Tribunal Federal ) since its founding 180 years ago. In addition, he is also one of the most famous members of the Afro- Brazilian community in Brazil.

Life

Joaquim Barbosa comes from poor conditions. He was born as one of eight children of a poor mason and a housewife who divorced later. At sixteen, he came to Brasilia, where he first earned his living in a laundry detergent as well as a printer for a newspaper and finished his high school at a public school. There was then a study of public law and jurisprudence at the University of Brasilia, completed by a PhD in 1993 at the University of Paris Panthéon- Assas. From 1976 to 1979 he was employed as an assessor in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, which earned him a stay abroad at the Brazilian Embassy in Helsinki during this period. From 1984 to 2003 he worked as a lawyer or attorney first in Brasilia, later in Rio de Janeiro at the Attorney General's Office.

In 2003 he was appointed by da Silva, former President Lula to the Supreme Court of Brazil, Lula da wanted that finally the presence of Afro- Brazilian jurists would normalcy. However, he was not the first black judge, but already the third, after two predecessors at the turn of the century. 2013 he was appointed by Lula's successor as president, Dilma Rousseff, the first black president of the Supreme Court.

A newspaper wrote after his appointment by the " poor boy who will change Brazil ." Barbosa also stands for the self-understanding of a new, self- place Brazil. Indeed, Barbosa has made an incredible and for Brazil, social ascent from the favelas to the top of a constitutional organ. Barbosa is one of the most credible integersten and, at the same time most popular personalities of the Brazilian public. He is in all layers and ethnicities very popular.

The lawyer speaks after several stays abroad in the USA, the UK, Austria and Germany fluent in French, English, Spanish and German. Since his sixteenth birthday he plays the violin and piano. He was a guest lecturer at UCLA (2002/ 03), and at Columbia University (1999 /2000).
