Joh Bjelke-Petersen

Sir Johannes " Joh " Bjelke -Petersen, KCMG ( born January 13, 1911 in Dannevirke, New Zealand, † April 23, 2005 in Kingaroy, Queensland, Australia) was an Australian politician of the Country Party and long-time Prime Minister of Queensland.

Life

Bjelke -Petersen, the son of an immigrant from Denmark pastor of the Lutheran Church, began his political career in the National Party of Australia in later renamed Country Party in 1946 with the election as a member of the then Kingroy Shire Council. In 1949 he was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of the State of Queensland.

In 1963 he was appointed by Prime Minister Francis Nicklin first time in the Queensland government and was until 1968 the Minister of Public Works and Housing.

After the unexpected death of Nicklins successor Jack Pizzey he was finally himself on August 8, 1968 even Prime Minister of Queensland and closed the left by the death of Pizzey gap in the coming years.

Most recently, he was ( Treasurer ) during his tenure from 1983 to 1987 and Minister of the Treasury. In 1984, Johannes Bjelke - Peterson as Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George raised to the peerage, and henceforth led the suffix " Sir ".

After an unsuccessful renewed bid as prime minister, which the opposition Labor Party brought ultimately benefits in elections to the Legislative Assembly, he resigned because of rising charges of corruption and bad decisions on 1 December 1987 and was replaced by Mike Ahern.
